In honour of Skin Cancer awareness month in May, NOVA magazine speaks to Dr. Anna Chacon, a board-certified dermatologist and published author based in Miami Florida.

Why do you think Skin-Cancer Awareness Month is important?
We would want to utilise this occasion to draw attention to a serious health concern that many of us are still unsure about. One thing we can learn this month is that skin cancer is one of the most preventable malignancies and that when identified early, it is treatable.
What are the best things to do to prevent skin cancer?
You may reduce your chance of developing skin cancer by shielding your skin from the sun's UV radiation and staying away from indoor tanning facilities and sunlamps. Maintain shade, and dress in coverings for your arms and legs. Put on a wide-brimmed hat to protect your face, head, ears, and neck from the sun. Put on wraparound sunglasses that offer UVA and UVB protection.
What are some factors that can help you decide if chemical or physical sunscreen is best for you?
Your skin's sensitivity and type are only two of the many variables that will determine this. Chemical sunscreens are more likely to irritate certain people who are prone to acne and inflammation, whereas physical sunscreens are often preferable for those with sensitive skin.
Do all skin types need sunscreen?
Yes, use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 regardless of your skin tone. Dark-skinned people won't burn as quickly, but they will still be burnt, and they are still prone to cancer and other sun-related illnesses including wrinkles and sunspots.
Which sunscreen brands do you recommend?
Cetaphil Daily Defence Moisturiser, £14.50 The great quality that Cetaphil consistently delivers is also present in their sunscreen lotion for sensitive skin. Both the body and the face can use it because it contains SPF50+.
NIVEA Sun Protect & Refresh Spray, £6.50 Sun protection products can now be found in mists and sprays in addition to the standard creams and lotions! It just leaves an energising experience with no white residue.
